Lekki shootings: U.S calls for immediate investigation

By Modupe Shodeinde

The United States has called for investigations into the killings of unarmed protesters at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos on Tuesday.

This call was made in a statement by U.S Department of State signed by the Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo on Thursday.

He condemned the use of force against the peaceful protesters and asked that investigations be carried out.

“The United States strongly condemns the use of excessive force by military forces who fired on unarmed demonstrators in Lagos, causing death and injury.

“We welcome an immediate investigation into any use of excessive force by members of the security forces.

“Those involved should be held to account in accordance with Nigerian law,” Mr Pompoe said.

He stated that the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are essential human rights and core democratic principles.

While urging for demonstrators to remain peaceful, he called on security forces to show restraint and respect fundamental rights.
