Man City set to appeal Premier League financial charges

Manchester City are expected to appeal an independent commission’s finding that the club breached 114 of 115 Premier League financial regulations, according to reports.

The charges relate to alleged breaches of the league’s financial rules between 2009 and 2018, as well as alleged failures to cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation.

The independent commission began hearing the case in September 2024 after the Premier League charged City in 2023.

No sanctions have been announced following the latest ruling, with the commission still expected to determine the appropriate punishment.

Manchester City have consistently denied the allegations and maintained that their position on the case has not changed.

“The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality,” a club spokesperson said.

The club also said it had respected due process and expected the Premier League to act as an independent and impartial regulator.

Potential sanctions under the Premier League’s disciplinary framework include a points deduction, fine, suspension from matches, restrictions on player registration and other penalties.

The possibility of expulsion from the Premier League has also been raised, although no sanction has yet been imposed.

City were charged with 115 alleged breaches covering financial information, payments to players and managers, UEFA regulations, profitability and sustainability rules, as well as cooperation with the investigation.

The latest development is expected to be followed by an appeal process through the Premier League’s disciplinary framework.
