By Ibrahim Adeleke

With his ratification by majority of the royal families, the Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Musuliu Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo may be crowned the Oba of Oshodi Land.

Already, nine out of the eleven royal families have agreed to make Akinsaya the next king.

The families – Arota – Ologun have decided to bury the hatchet and agreed on who to be the Oba of Oshodi land.

According to the Adele (regent) of Oshodi land, Alhaji Biliaminu Akinola, eleven royal families have the right to obaship and chieftaincy stool in Oshodi land.

However, Nine royal families including Almaroof, Odebesi, Dawodu, Ajenifuja, Akesode, Afariogun, Shonibare, kupoluyi and Owoseni have unanimously resolved to set Mc-Oluomo on the throne as Oba of Oshodi.

The other two royal families, Olushi Onigbesa and Akinsanya disagreed with the choice of the nine royal families.

According to a statement by Olushi Onigbesa royal family, Kabiru Eyantan Onigbesa is the only legible who is entitled to the stool of oba, declaring tgat MC Oluomo is not a member of the family.

He appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to stop Oluomo from becoming the Oba of Oshodi to avert communal crisis, breakdown of law and order and bloodshed in Oshodi community.

So far, Oshodi land has been in existence for over 300 years but none of the ruling houses has produced a king except for Baales and the last Baale died in 1970.

The first two Baales of Oshodi, Alhaji Yekeen Ajenifuja, his reign was during the western region era and after his death, Alhaji Y. S. Owoseni from Kupoluyi family succeeded him.

The regent stated that the first shot Oshodi had at installing a king was in 1970 when Lagos State government attempted to upgrade the status of Baale Owoseni to Oba.

He explained that due to protest from some of the ruling houses who objected to the move, the chance of having an Oba in Oshodi was stalled.

He stated that it marked the first and the last attempt at kingship in Oshodi, while the community has continued to have Baales until recently the call for an Oba was revived.

Meanwhile, the controversy over the legibility of MC Oluomo to the throne remains as the royal family of Olushi Onigbesa has issued a statement calling on the state government to stop him.
