MKO Abiola’s sons detained for nine days over robbery allegation

By Emmanuel Awosika

Two sons of the late MKO Abiola have spent nine days in police detention after they were arrested for their alleged involvement in a robbery on their late father’s residence in Ikeja.

Earlier, Lagos Street Journal reported that robbers invaded the late MKO Abiola’s house on September 2, carting away various valuables.

The two sons, Kassim and Aliyu, had been arrested on the same day by men of the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad and taken in for detention.

Reportedly, the SARS operatives arrested them because their stepmother, Mrs. Adebisi Abiola, had allegedly reported them for having a hand in the robbery attempt.

However, the Abiola children are protesting their arrest and continued detention and have filed a suit demanding N100m in damages from the police.

The suit, filed by Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), accused the police of unlawfully arresting and detaining the Abiola siblings.

The suit said the SARS operatives who conducted the arrest had no arrest warrant, adding that the children had been dragged like “common thieves” and driven to the Ikeja police station.

The lawyer also revealed that the police officers had returned to the Abiola residence to search the rooms belonging to both siblings but found nothing incriminating.

The lawyer said the victims were tortured and humiliated, adding that they were also denied access to a lawyer.

In his submission, the lawyer said the police violated Kassim and Aliyu’s rights as outlined in sections 35, 37, 41, 44 and 46 of the Nigerian Constitution.

He prayed the Court to order the immediate release of the duo from detention, as they are about to travel abroad for educational purposes.

He also demanded that the police pay N100m in damages and send an apology letter to the individuals.
