The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has said electricity consumers receiving below 12 hours of power won’t have their payments increased under the new tariff policy.

Mr Dafe Akpeneye, NERC Commissioner, Legal Licensing and Compliance, made this known during the agency’s virtual town hall meeting with customers on the new electricity tariffs.

He said electricity consumers have been categorized into A-E bands, with bands D and E comprising those that enjoy less than 12 hours of electricity per day.

According to him, DisCos should not to increase amount paid by customers not getting above 12 hours.

He clarified that the NERC decided the hours and bands, but the DisCos were in charge of placing customers in the power bands.

“Anyone who is enjoying less than 12 hours of electricity must not have their tariffs increased.

“Customers who receive electricity service below the band they have been assigned can have the DisCos move them to the actual band of electricity service they receive.

“Unhappy? Contest the band classification you have been assigned,” he said.
