Multiple crashes on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway kill five

By Emmanuel Awosika

It was a bloody Sunday for Iyana-Ipaja residents near the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway after multiple crashes on the road claimed five lives.

Per reports, the first crash had occured at Pleasure Bus-Stop and involved an LT bus and truck laden with beer, which were attempting to cross the bridge into Iyana-Ipaja.

Eyewitnesses allege the incident happened when a passenger car entered the road without warning just ahead of the truck.

The truck had swerved to avoid hitting the passenger car ahead only to hit the LT bus. It reportedly killed a boy who was alongside his mother in the process.

The truck eventually crashed, emptying its contents even as sympathisers gathered to extricate victims trapped in the wreckage.

However, as sympathisers waited for emergency responders to arrive, another accident involving multiple vehicles happened.

Reportedly, the crash occurred when oncoming vehicles on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway crashed into another after a driver slowed down to view the carnage of the first crash.

The two crashes caused massive traffic hold-up in the area, with many vehicles driving against traffic in order to escape.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has responded to the incident as at the time of filing this report.
