Northwest governor responsible for bandit attacks, APC alleges

By Emmanuel Awosika

The All Progressives Congress has alleged that a governor in the Northwestern Nigeria is responsible for the spate of banditry, kidnappings, and other criminal activities in the region.

The APC called on national security agencies to investigate the claim, which it said was found in an intelligence report.

Deputy National Publicity Secretary for the ruling party, Yekini Nabena, made the allegation in a statement on Thursday. However, he failed to name the governor in question.

Currently, APC governors control five state in the seven-state Northwest region, while PDP governors control two.

The APC warned the PDP against politicising the kidnap of students from the Government Secondary School (GSSS) in Kankara, Katsina State by bandits.

The ruling also reacted to a protest by the PDP and some women at its national headquarters in Abuja, accusing the PDP of manipulating the security crisis for political gain.

The party spokesperson said in his statement:

“Our security agencies have intelligence reports linking one of the Northwest governors to collusion and sponsorship of violent and criminal activities of bandits. I won’t give details because of the sensitive and security nature of the issue

However, relevant security agencies must as a matter of urgency, investigate the report and determine its veracity. Human life is not what we should play political chess games with.

“We must shun enemies of the country including the PDP who seek political gains from issues of insecurity.

“Our security agencies must also be alert to plots to further destabilise the Northwest region and frustrate the quick and safe release of students abducted from the GSSS,” Nabena said.

Banditry and abductions have become the order of the day in the Northwestern region, with the Sultan of Sokoto Sa’ad Abubakar (III) recently saying nowhere is safe in the country anymore.
