Obaseki emerges victorious in Edo Governorship Election

By Emmanuel Awosika

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced Godwin Obaseki, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, as winner of the 2020 Edo State Governorship Election

Obaseki received 307,995 votes, which was enough to secure the win at the expense of his challenger, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress, who received 223,619 votes.

The INEC Returning Officer, Professor Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, who announced the results on Sunday, said Obaseki was re-elected after complying with all legal requirements.

Obaseki had contested against the APC candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and thirteen other candidates.

He was a member of the APC when he became governor of Edo State in 2016. However, he decamped to the PDP after the APC refused to approve his second-term ambition.

Obaseki said his re-election was a “triumph over godfatherism”, following the announcement.

He said, “Words fail me in saluting our teeming supporters who displayed immense courage in the face of threats, intimidation, and brutalisation.

“The collective will of Edo people made it possible for us this triumph over godfatherism. Congratulations to Edo people.”
