One Year After: Imoshe community demands justice for murdered son

By Rasaq Adebayo

One year after he was allegedly killed by police, the residents of Imoshe Community in Ado Odo-Otta LGA of Ogun State are still agitating for justice for one of their sons, Mathew Asafa Oke.

The community, under the leadership of its traditional head, High Chief Amusa Lawal insisted that the killers of their son must be brought to book.

Oke was reportedly by police on 23rd of September 23, 2020 in an attack allegedly led by the traditional ruler of Ikogbo, Oba Nurudeen Osoja over a land dispute.

Chief Lawal told our correspondent that late Oke was shot dead during the attack launched on Imoshe community by the people of Ikogbo, another community in the same local government area.

According to him, the traditional ruler of Ikogbo community was said to have led a police patrol vehicle to the land with some thugs to claim ‘Eba Odan’ portion of land which belongs to the Imoshe.

He said chaos broke out between the two communities which led to riot at Orita junction at Imoshe during which oke’s life was eventually terminated while three others (Princes Segun and Akeem Lawal, the Baale’s sons and an Hausa man) were brutally injured by bullets from the police.

He said the remains of the victim, after interventions by the Agbara Area Command inspectors and the IGP office in Abuja, have been deposited in the morgue at Otta General Hospital till date.

“The killers of Matthew Asafa Oke have not been punished! They’re still moving around freely while the family of the deceased are still in shock and pain. We want our amiable governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun and all officers in charge of the case to assist us. Imoshe has all ownership rights on the portion of the land on which they killed our son. And we want them to release the corpse for befitting burial,” he stated.
