Pastor Adeboye Denies Protesting Against Jonathan, Gives Reason For Carrying Placard
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has denied reports that he carried a placard to protest against former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Adeboye said the photograph showing him carrying a placard was taken during a prayer walk organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and not a demonstration against Jonathan.
The cleric made the clarification while addressing his followers in a viral video, where he recalled how critics had described him as a wicked man over the incident.
According to him, some reports had presented the photograph as evidence that he protested against Jonathan’s administration.
Adeboye, however, admitted carrying the placard but insisted that the exercise was strictly a prayer walk.
He said, “Sure I carried a placard and I can’t deny that, it wasn’t a protest, it was a prayer walk.
“We wanted to pray and the CAN chairman said all churches should do a prayer walk near their churches and that’s what I did in Ebute Metta.”
The RCCG leader explained that the exercise took place in 2020, five years after Jonathan left office in 2015.
He faulted the reports for presenting the photograph as though it was taken during Jonathan’s presidency.
“But I carried a placard in 2020, Jonathan ceased to be president in 2015, I carried a placard five years in the second term of Buhari but it was twisted that I did what I did in 2015 and everybody swallowed it,” he said.
Adeboye also criticised the journalist responsible for the report, recalling the importance of investigative journalism and proper verification before publishing information.
