2027: ADC Challenges Tinubu To Fulfil Electricity Promise Before Seeking Re-election
The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) has challenged President Bola Tinubu to fulfil his campaign promise on electricity supply before seeking another term in office.
The council said Nigerians should not vote for Tinubu for a second term if he failed to provide constant electricity within his first four years in office.
The ADC-PCC stated this while reacting to comments by the spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Dele Alake, who defended the Tinubu administration’s performance in the power sector.
In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, the council recalled Tinubu’s promise during the 2023 presidential campaign.
According to the council, Tinubu had told Nigerians: “Don’t vote for me for second term if I fail to deliver electricity.”
It argued that more than three years after the promise, Nigerians were still experiencing persistent power outages, repeated national grid collapses and unreliable electricity supply.
The opposition campaign council also accused the administration of increasing electricity tariffs without ensuring corresponding improvements in power supply.
It said the rising cost of electricity had placed additional pressure on households, manufacturers and small businesses struggling with the cost of alternative sources of power.
The council further questioned the effectiveness of the Presidential Metering Initiative, alleging that electricity distribution companies still issued estimated bills to consumers despite the programme.
It also faulted the government’s reliance on the Electricity Act and bond programmes to defend its performance in the sector.
The ADC-PCC said legislative reforms and financial commitments could not replace actual electricity supply.
“An Act is not electricity. A bond prospectus does not power homes and factories. Nigerians cannot eat statutes. What Nigerians need is electricity that works, not another round of explanations and publicity,” the statement read.
The council maintained that the President’s condition for seeking a second term was straightforward: deliver electricity or do not ask Nigerians for another mandate.
It urged the ruling party to address Tinubu’s campaign promise rather than attempt to explain away his words.
The ADC-PCC added that Nigerians would assess the administration based on its performance in the power sector as the 2027 general elections approach.
