A director in Abia State Ministry of Education, Wogu Alozie, has been arrested for allegedly extorting the sum of ₦500 each from primary and secondary students in the state.

The Punch reports that the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Prof. A. C. B. Agbazuere, disclosed that the said Alozie wrote letters to primary and secondary schools in the state and signed for the Permanent Secretary without the consent of the said Permanent Secretary.

The disclosure is contained in a statement last Sunday.

According to the statement, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu is greatly appalled by such criminal act.

He explained that Wogu “has owned up to the illicit act and is presently with the police to “completely unmask the syndicate”

The state government, however, warned that “all those who pad salaries, hide under the cover of government to defraud people or engage in other forms of corruption are advised in their own interest to have a rethink or be prepared to taste the sour waters of the law.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command, Geoffrey Ogbonna, said he is not aware of the incidence.
