Reps probe police colleges decay, inadequacies

The House of Representatives is to investigate the current state of Nigeria Police Training Colleges across Nigeria.
At the plenary on Wednesday, the lawmakers unanimously adopted a motion titled ‘Need to Investigate the Deteriorating Conditions of Nigerian Police Training Colleges,’ as moved by Zayyad Ibrahim.
Ibrahim noted that following the Federal Government’s initiatives and commitment to tackle the shortage of manpower and insecurity afflicting the country, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), approved the recruitment of 60,000 police personnel across the 774 Local Government Areas, translating into 10,000 personnel every year.
The lawmaker also recalled that the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, on September 15, 2021, revealed that the 2020 recruitment exercise had not been actualised, therefore, 20,000 personnel were expected to be recruited before the end of this year.
He further recalled that in September 2019, the Senate summoned the Minister of Police Affairs over the deteriorating conditions of the colleges, with most of them in dilapidated states and inadequate to conveniently and efficiently accommodate trainees of such magnitude.
Ibrahim said, “The House is cognisant of the effect on the health, morale and productivity of trainees. Urgent steps need to be taken in accordance with the provisions of Section 9(d), (e) and (j) of the Nigeria Police Act to renovate facilities at the police training colleges.”
Adopting the motion, the House mandated the Committee on Police Affairs to investigate the matter and report back within two weeks.
