Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has left the national team’s training camp ahead of the country’s Nations League clash with Denmark.

Ronaldo announced his departure on Wednesday after a press conference by Portugal coach Jorge Jesus and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

The 41-year-old did not immediately disclose the reason for his decision but said he would explain the circumstances behind his departure later.

“After the National Team coach’s press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the National Team training camp,” Ronaldo said.

“In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led to my departure from the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself.”

His departure came amid reports of tension between him and Jesus after Ronaldo remained on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway.

Jesus had previously denied any disagreement with Ronaldo, saying the forward had not refused to train and that decisions concerning his participation had been discussed with him.

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed that Ronaldo did not take part in Wednesday’s training session ahead of the Denmark match.

Jesus also said Ronaldo would not feature against Denmark, explaining that the decision was related to the player’s physical condition and the need for recovery between matches.

Ronaldo’s departure has raised questions about his immediate involvement with the national team, although he did not announce his retirement from international football.

Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark in their next Nations League fixture.
