 Tragedy as son sets ablaze mother in Niger

A school principal, Mrs Comforts Jiya, was reportedly set ablaze on Friday in Minna, Niger State, by her son, Steve Jiya.

The tragedy, according to multiple sources, occurred at about 3pm on Friday in Minna, the state capital.

A family source, who preferred not to be named, said the woman died on Friday at the General Hospital, Minna, where she was receiving treatment.

Another source said her son, Steve, had attempted on several occasions to attack his mother but had his way when he poured petrol on her.

Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, could not be reached for comments as of press time.

However, the suspect, Steve, has been remanded by a Minna High Court.

The GRA Police Division, Minna, had arraigned him in court.

Until her death, Mrs Jiya was principal of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Sabon Wuse and Maryam Babangida Girls’ Science College.
