Tribunal Upholds Diri’s Victory At Bayelsa Governorship Polls

A Bayelsa Governorship Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja today upheld Duoye Diri’s win at the Bayelsa Governorship elections held last year.

The tribunal, headed by Justice Owodunni, dismissed all petitions brought forward by opposition parties challenging Duoye Diri’s election as Governor of Bayelsa State.

In its judgment, the tribunal maintained that the cases lacked merit and provided insufficient evidence to prompt a reversal of Diri’s victory.

The parties had accused Diri’s running mate, Senator Ewhrudjakpo, of faking his NYSC discharge certificate and declaration of age, in hopes this would void the victory. However, the tribunal said the parties failed to prove these allegations and subsequently threw them out.

Recall that Diri had only been declared Bayelsa State Governor after a Supreme Court decision had led to the disqualification of David Lyon, standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Diri, who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), placed second in the voting and had replaced the ousted David Lyon as Governor.
