Two men have been rescued from a fire that engulfed a bungalow in the Itire area of Lagos State, leaving one of them with burn injuries.

The fire broke out at 43 Onitire Road, near Smith Bus Stop, on Monday night, affecting an eight-room bungalow and part of an adjoining two-storey residential building.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said it received an emergency call at about 9:10 p.m. and arrived at the scene at 9:35 p.m. to begin firefighting and rescue operations.

During the operation, firefighters rescued a 75-year-old wheelchair-bound man from the bungalow.

A 42-year-old man who sustained burns while attempting to rescue the elderly man was also rescued and taken to Gbagada General Hospital by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service for treatment.

The fire service said the bungalow and its contents were severely damaged, while the affected section of the adjoining two-storey building sustained minor damage.

Firefighters from the Isolo, Sari and Bolade stations participated in the operation, alongside personnel from the Federal Fire Service, the Lagos Response Unit, the police, and other emergency agencies.

The agency said the fire was brought under control, adding that preliminary findings suggested an electrical surge linked to negligence might have caused the incident. However, it noted that the exact cause was yet to be determined.

The Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Abimbola Adeseye, urged residents to maintain their electrical installations, avoid overloading sockets and use qualified electricians to repair faulty systems.
