Prof. Folasade Ogunsola is UNILAG’s new Ag. VC

The University of Lagos, on Monday, elected a new acting Vice Chancellor in person of Professor Folasade Ogunsola.

Ogunsola, formerly Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development Services, emerged acting VC after defeating her opponent, Professor Ben Oghojafor, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Management Sciences in an election by members of the University Senate.

According to the reports, Ogunsola polled 135 of the 167 votes casted, while Oghojafor polled only 31 votes. One vote was declared void.

The Senate of the University was asked to elect a new acting VC by the Federal Government, which also instructed both the Pro Chancellor, Dr. Wale Babalakin, and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, to step down from their positions.

The FG order, and subsequent election, are reflective of the leadership crisis that has gripped UNILAG, popularly called “The Nation’s Pride”, in recent weeks.

Earlier, the Pro Chancellor, Dr. Wale Babalakin, removed former VC, Prof. wOluwatoyin Ogundipe, over allegations of financial misconduct, appointing Prof. Omololu Soyombo of the Faculty of Social Sciences in his place.

However, Ogundipe protested his removal, declaring that he was still the legal VC of the university. The ensuing impasse between the Pro Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor had prompted the Federal Government’s intervention.

The FG, thereafter, set up a Special Visitation Panel to conduct investigations into the issue. It also ordered the Senate of the university to nominate a new acting VC, pending the outcome of the panel’s investigation.
