US 2020 Elections: Two openly gay, black men elected to Congress in historic win

Democrats Richie Torres and Mondair Jones have made US history in the 2020 election after becoming the first gay, black men to be elected to Congress.

Torres, 32, beat his Republican challenger and will represent South Bronx in the US House of Representatives.

Jones, 33, also won his election and will represent New York’s 17th congressional district in the House of Representatives.

The historic feat comes after Democratic Presidential Candidate, Joe Biden, broke former President Barack Obama’s record for most popular votes received.

As at the last count, Biden had polled more than 70 million votes, which is higher than Barack Obama’s figure of 69.5 million votes during the 2008 election.
