France booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Paraguay 1-0 in a tense Round of 16 clash played in Philadelphia.

The match remained goalless until the 70th minute when captain Kylian Mbappe calmly converted a penalty to hand the two-time world champions the decisive breakthrough.

France dominated possession for much of the contest but struggled to break down Paraguay’s disciplined defence before substitute Désiré Doué won the penalty that proved to be the difference.

Paraguay pushed for a late equaliser, but France’s defence held firm to preserve the slender advantage and seal progression to the last eight.

The victory sets up a quarter-final showdown between France and Morocco, who earlier secured their place in the next round with a convincing win over Canada.

Mbappe’s goal also added to his impressive World Cup scoring record as France continued their pursuit of a third world title.
