UI Senate appoints Ekanola Acting VC

By Emmanuel Awosika
Professor Babatunde Ekanola has emerged the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan following a Senate election held on Monday.
Ekanola, who was previously the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, received 275 votes during the Senate election to beat his rivals to the position.
The defeated candidates include Professor Ayo Oluleye (80 votes); Professor Adigun Agbaje (15 votes); Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation); and Professor Olanike Adeyemo (13 votes) and Professor Gbemisola Oke (14 votes).
Ekanola is expected to head the university’s administration for a period of six months and will resume office on 1 December 2020.
Ekanola’s appointment brings a close to disputes that have trailed the selection of a new VC for the University of Ibadan.
An impasse had developed after two staff unions in the university, SSANU and NASU, expressed opposition to what they described as a plot to impose a new Vice Chancellor on the institution.
The disputed led Minister for Education, Adamu Adamu, to order a fresh election following complaints levelled against key University officials including the former VC, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka.
