Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, has taken disciplinary action against 19 of its personnel over various acts of misconduct recorded during the 2025 operational year.

The General Manager of the agency, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this on Thursday in Lagos, noting that the sanctions were implemented following approvals granted by the Lagos State Civil Service Commission.

According to him, the disciplinary measures included the outright dismissal of five officers, the demotion of nine others, while the remaining affected personnel were issued severe warning letters.

Bakare-Oki explained that the authority has significantly strengthened its internal oversight mechanisms to address indiscipline and unethical conduct among officers deployed on Lagos roads.

“We have enhanced the capacity of our surveillance unit. On a daily basis, monitoring teams are deployed to check the activities of our officers on the field,” he said.

He added that surveillance officers operate in plain clothes to discreetly observe personnel who may attempt to act contrary to established rules and operational guidelines.

“This undercover monitoring, similar to a mystery shopper approach, helps us identify officers who deviate from standard procedures. These measures are deliberately put in place to curb excesses and uphold professionalism,” he stated.

The LASTMA boss further stressed that complaints from the public are treated with utmost seriousness, adding that all allegations of misconduct are thoroughly investigated before any disciplinary action is taken.

We have several instances where officers have been sanctioned following credible reports from members of the public. Due diligence is always carried out to establish the facts, and once an officer is found culpable, appropriate punishment follows,” he said.

Bakare-Oki reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to efficient traffic management in Lagos, stressing that LASTMA remains focused on ensuring the smooth flow of traffic and facilitating the safe movement of people and goods across the state.
