6 dead in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway accident
The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has confirmed that six people lost their lives, while 23 others sustained injuries in a lone road accident near Four Square Camp along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The Ogun State Command spokesperson of the FRSC, Mr Odunsin Afolabi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta.
According to him, the crash occurred at about 11:27 a.m., involving a DAF CF 380 trailer with registration number SNA 287 XA.
“The response time was two minutes, as rescue operatives from the FRSC Ogunmakin Unit Command promptly arrived at the scene,” Afolabi said.
He explained that a total of 29 persons were involved in the accident, adding that 23 victims sustained varying degrees of injuries, while six passengers died on the spot.
Afolabi attributed the crash to fatigue and excessive speeding, which reportedly caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
He also cautioned motorists against the practice of conveying passengers alongside cattle or goods, warning that such mixed loading often complicates rescue efforts and increases the risk of fatalities during accidents.
“The injured victims and the corpses of the deceased were evacuated to Oreoluwa Hospital, GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, and Victory Hospital, Ogere,” he added.
The FRSC reiterated its call on motorists, particularly operators of commercial and articulated vehicles, to carry out routine vehicle maintenance, avoid speeding, and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to reduce road crashes, especially on major highways.
