 Abducted Katsina student who escaped says 520 schooboys with gunmen

Abducted student of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina, who escaped from bandits narrates his experience and says 520 students were taken away by gunmen.

One of the students who was abducted by the gunmen while speaking with BBC Hausa on Monday, said the incident happened around 9:00pm on Friday.

The 17-year old whose name was kept anonymous narrated his experience.

“Everyone came out and we ran up the wall. After we climbed the wall, they used torchlights and told us to come back,” he said.

“After we were taken into the forest, one of them ordered us to stop and count before continuing our journey. They asked one of us to count and there were 520 students.

“We kept walking in the bush. We were pushed and beaten. We spent the night walking. Thirty minutes before dawn, we were told to rest.

“After they sat us down, I leaned back a little. I found the side of a tree and I turned my back on them. I laid down and straightened my legs.

“After everyone left, I started crawling and looking round, until I entered a nearby village, and it is by the special grace of God that I was able to escape,” he said.

Gunmen on Friday, had invaded the boarding school and engaged in sporadic shootings to scare away residents.

However, the presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu while speaking with BBC Hausa Service, said students who escaped told military only 10 schoolboys were with the bandits.
