ASUU denies reports of plans to suspend strike

By Modupe Shodeinde

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has discredited reports stating it has agreed to suspend the ongoing strike.

It had been reported that the union after a meeting with the Federal Government team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, on Friday, had agreed to suspend its 8-months strike action after the FG had reportedly increased its offer for Earned Allowances to university-based unions and funding for the revitalization of public universities from N65 billion to N70 billion.

Reports had it that the union after meeting with its leadership and organs, will communicate their decision to the government and announce a date for calling off the prolonged strike.

A source within the university union, was also quoted to have stated that ASUU insisted that the agreement to call off the strike should not be announced until it has been approved by its members.

However, ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in an interview with Vanguard has denied knowledge of any agreement to call off the strike.

Ogunyemi said the union only agreed to convey the Government message to their organs and get back to the Government
Prof. Ogunyemi, said: ”I am not aware of that. All I know is that we had a meeting and we are going to report to our members. But I don’t know about suspension of the strike.”
