Clash between APC and PDP supporters in Ondo leaves five injured

By Emmanuel Awosika

A bloody clash between supporters of Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and his opponent in the coming governorship elections, Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party, has left about five people injured.

According to reports, the event happened in Akoko South West Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday as convoys of both candidates met in the area.

Eyewitnesses say the clash had led to the stopping of all social and economic activity in the area.

The two camps have traded words since the incident occurred, with each accusing the other instigating the violence.

Richard Olatunde, spokesman for the Akeredolu campaign, said that supporters of Eyitayo Jegede had launched the first attack on the Governor’s convoy.

He said, “While we are shocked and saddened by this attack, we are not too surprised, because the PDP has shown that it is not focusing on issues in its campaign for the election. They will rather deploy violence and falsehood to score cheap political points.”

In response, the Eyitayo Jegede campaign accused the PDP of being responsible for the attack, saying Rotimi Akeredolu’s supporters had attacked Jegede’s convoy first.

The words of Head of Media Research for the Eyitayo Jegede campaign, Richard Fasua:” As of now, no fewer than three vehicles in the convoy of Jegede have been badly damaged, while Jegede himself is being held hostage inside the palace of the monarch of Oba-Akoko by gun-totting hoodlums suspected to be agents of the governor.

“Curiously, Akeredolu was sighted inside the convoy while the attacks lasted, while police operatives in the location looked on in the face of the orgies of madness.”

As at the time of writing the Ondo State Police Command has sent security operatives to the area to reduce tensions.

Reports also say that a vehicle was burnt at the scene of the violence.
