 COVID-19: FG announces new five-week restrictions

The Federal Government has announced fresh restrictions on gatherings as the country struggles to stem the spread of COVID-19.

The President, Muhammadu Buhari, ordered the closure of public spaces including bars, night clubs, pubs and event centres, and recreational venues for the next five weeks.

Furthermore, he ordered the closure of restaurants in the country while schools will remain closed until at 18 January 2021.

The FG also restricted persons at informal and formal events, including weddings, conferences, congresses, office parties, concerts, seminars, sporting events, and others to 50 persons.

Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, announced the new restrictions during a press conference on Monday.

Mustapha, in what was his first public appearance after entering self-isolation over his COVID-19 infection, said civil servants on G12 and below will work from home for the next five weeks.

He also stated that religious gatherings in the country will be capped and 50% capacity, adding that use of face masks at such gatherings was mandatory in such situations.

The PTF Chairman warned Nigerians against indulging in reckless behaviour that will aid spread of the virus.

He revealed that nine members of his family have tested positive for COVID-19, calling on citizens to protect their families.

He said, “We are in for a very difficult time, but with the supports of all Nigerians by observing all protocols, we can weather the storm together.
