De Bruyne Crowned Premier League Player Of The Season

By Emmanuel Awosika

Manchester City midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne, has won the Premier League player of the year award for the 2019/2020 season.

De Bruyne, 29, beat out Southampton forward Danny Ings, Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope, Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy and Liverpool trio of Sadio Mane, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson.

The award caps off what has been a remarkable campaign for the Belgian playmaker.

He provided an impressive 20 assists during the season, equalling the record set by Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry, in the 2002-2003 season. He also scored an additional 13 goals, bringing his tally for Manchester City this season to 16 goals and 23 assists.

However, the award may provide little consolation for De Bruyne following his side’s failure to retain the EPL title they won last season. The Citizens also crashed out of the Champions League in a shock loss to Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais.

Nevertheless, it shows why Kevin De Bruyne is considered one of the most elite playmakers in the game currently. Since joining City in five seasons ago, he has made a total of 89 assists and scored 57 goals in 222 appearances for the club.
