Desist from violence, Jonathan tells Niger Delta youths

By Emmanuel Awosika

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday urged Niger Delta youths to shun any form of violence, as it could impact the country’s economic growth negatively.

He said the Niger Delta region contributes massively to the economy through oil and gas proceeds and any disturbance in the area will affect the country’s economy adversely.

Jonathan made this known while receiving executives of the Movement for the Survival of Ijaw Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta at his home in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State yesterday.

“The future belongs to the youths, who are at the centre of most developmental endeavours and policies of government. So, the diversion of youthful energy towards violence is not desirable at all,” the former President stated.

President of the MOSIEND, Mr. Kennedy Tonjo-West, said the group’s visit to Jonathan was to inquire on strategies for mitigating problems facing the Ijaw, Niger Delta and Nigeria in general.

He also urged Jonathan to prevail on the Federal Government to reverse its decision to increase petrol prices and electricity tariffs.
