Serial Formula One racing champion Lewis Hamilton set to be knighted next year after his name appeared in the New Year’s honours list.

Hamilton, who has the most Formula One wins, won a record-tying world title at the Turkish Grand Prix last weekend.

Many have called for Hamilton to receive a knightood in recognition of his achievements in the sporting arena.

Of the requests for him to be knighted, Hamilton said: “When I think about that honour I think about people like my grand-dad who served in the war.”

Hamilton, 35, is one of the UK’s most successful sport stard in history. Following his move to Mercedes in 2013, he has set — and broken — several records in the Formula One event.

He holds the record for highest number of Formula One wins, and pole positions, having won the world title six times in the last seven years.
