 Inspector-General of Police disbands SARS nationwide

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has disbanded the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigerian Police Force.

The IGP announced this in a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, on Sunday.

The announcement comes after days of protests in various parts of the country calling for the disbandment of the the notorious SARS unit.

The IGP, who said the disbandment was in response to the agitations of Nigerians, said that operatives attached with the defunct SARS unit will be redeployed immediately.

He announced the creation of an Investigation Team, which will comprise human rights bodies and civil society organizations, to collaborate with the Police to investigate cases of human rights violations by security operatives.
