Katsina: Okonjo-Iweala calls on Federal Government to rescue abducted students

By Emmanuel Awosika

A former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has called on the Federal Government to make all possible efforts to rescue students abducted from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.

Describing the incident as “heartbreaking,” Okonjo-Iweala said those using the abductees as pawns must be sanctioned.

The former Minister, who is expected to emerge Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), made this known on Twitter on Tuesday night.

She tweeted: “The abduction of more than 300 schoolboys in Katsina is heartbreaking. What a recurring nightmare. My heart goes out to the families of the missing boys. The authorities must do all possible to #BringBackOurBoys! Those using our children as pawns must be held accountable!”

According to reports, bandits had abducted the students on Friday night after a shootout with policemen.

Terrorist Islamic sect, Boko Haram, later claimed responsibility for the attack, while debunking rumors that it had begun negotiations with the Federal Government for the boys’ release.

The abduction has drawn widespread condemnation across the country, with many urging the government to avoid a repeat of history when students were abducted from schools in Chibok, Borno State; and Dapchi, Yobe State.
