Kano State orders closure of schools

By Emmanuel Awosika

Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has ordered the closure of all private and public schools in the state.

This is contained in an statement signed by the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Sanusi Kiru, and released on Wednesday morning.

The government failed to give reasons for the order, but information reaching us suggests it may be linked to the spike in COVID-19 infections which has forced state governments in Kaduna and Jigawa shut down schools.

Another reason put forward for the closure of schools is the recent abduction of students from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.

The statement said parents and guardians are expected to visit schools today to take their wards home.

Meanwhile, the Kano State government also ordered the closure of all private and public health training institutions in the state.

Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr Aminu Tsanyawa, made the announcement on Wednesday morning.

Some of the affected institutions include: School of Basic/Post Basic Nursing and Midwifery, School of Health Technology and School of Hygiene.
