LASTMA impounds 84 vehicles in Lagos traffic crackdown
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 84 commercial and private vehicles during a weekend enforcement operation across parts of the state.
The operation was carried out in Idumota, Iddo, Ijora-Olopa, Costain and Onipanu over various traffic violations, including driving against traffic, illegal parking, indiscriminate loading and the use of unauthorised locations as garages.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the agency was particularly concerned about commercial buses reversing against traffic along the one-way stretch from Iddo to Idumota through Carter Bridge.
He said the practice could endanger motorists, commuters and pedestrians who might be caught unaware by vehicles reversing against the prescribed direction of traffic.
The enforcement operation reportedly met resistance in some areas, with some LASTMA personnel assaulted and injured. The agency also said some individuals suspected of attacking its officers and damaging operational vehicles were apprehended.
Bakare-Oki said the agency had repeatedly warned transport operators, commercial bus drivers and other road users against using under-bridge spaces, road setbacks and other unauthorised locations as garages.
He urged motorists and commercial bus operators to comply with traffic regulations and desist from one-way driving, dangerous reversing, illegal parking and indiscriminate loading.
He warned that further violations would attract enforcement measures in line with Lagos State traffic laws.
