N50m compensation: Cops to pay family of murdered musician

By Modupe Shodeinde

The Nigerian Police has been ordered to pay the sum of N50 million as compensation to the family of musician, Daniel Chibuike-Ikeagwuchi (popularly called Sleek), who was killed by cops in Rivers State.

The judgement was given by a Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, over the gruesome murder of Sleek, which it declared contravenes the constitution of Nigeria.

Two Cops of the Nigerian police had allegedly killed Sleek on the 19th of September, 2020, over an unknown reason.

This had led to protests by the victim’s family and Civil Society Organisation. The family of Sleek had pressed charges against the Nigerian police for the death of their son.

The family had on four grounds prayed the court declared the killing of their son unlawful and award the sum of N1 billion as compensation to the family of the victim.

In his ruling yesterday, the trial Judge, Justice, S.C. Amadi, granted the four prayers of the claimants and awarded the sum of N50 million against the defendants, instead of the N1 billion sought by the family of the victim.

Counsel for the family of Sleek, , Noble Njoku, said the Judgment would serve as deterrent to men of Nigerian force involved in indiscriminate killings.
