 Hisbah bans the term “Black Friday”, says it is an holy day

A shariah law enforcement agency in Kano state, Hisbah, has ordered traders to stop using the term “Black Friday” to denote Friday promo sales of goods to customers at a subsidised price.

The agency on Friday, in a letter to a private broadcast media organisation, Cool FM, ordered a stop to running adverts using the term “Black Friday.”

The letter signed by Hisbah Principal Executive Officer II, Abubakar Muhammad Ali, partly reads: “I am directed to write and notify you that the office (Hisbah) is in receipt of complaint for the conduct of Black Friday Sales on 27th November, 2020.

“Accordingly, we wish to express our concern on the tagging of Friday as “Black Friday,” and further inform you that the majority of the inhabitants of Kano state are Muslims that consider Friday as a Holy Day.

“In view of the forgoing you are requested to stop calling the day as “Black Friday,” with immediate effect.

“Note that Hisbah will be around for surveillance purposes, with a view to avoid occurrence of any immoral activity as well as maintaining of peace and stability in the state.”

It was gathered that Cool FM in compliance with the directives, has pulled down all adverts with the term “Black Friday”.

The Commander General of Hisbah, Sheikh Aroun Ibn Sinah also affirmed the determination by the board to enforce “total compliance to shariah injunctions” in all parts of Kano state.
