NUT decries rise in abduction of students, school invasions

By Emmanuel Awosika

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has decried the continued invasion of schools and abduction of students and teachers in the country.

The NUT charged the government at the Federal, state, and local levels to ensure provision of security to schools nationwide.

The union’s Secretary-General, Dr Mike Ike, made the request on Tuesday in a statement addressing the recent abduction of students in Katsina State.

Ike urged the government to avoid a repeat of tragedies in Chibok and Dapchi that disrupted the fragile academic sector.

He called on relevant stakeholders to ensure 24-hour surveillance of academic institutions in order to prevent attacks and abductions.

Expressing sympathy for the affected families, the union promised to prevail the government to rescue the abductees and return them to their families.

He further asked the government to provide Life Insurance and Hazard Allowance, as approved by the President Muhammadu Buhari on the 2020 Teacher’s Day.

It added: “Also, the government must begin to consider the implementation of Life Insurance and Hazard Allowance to teachers in our Basic and Senior Secondary Schools as approved by His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR on the occasion of the World Teachers’ Day 2020.

“Our prayers are with families of the abducted teachers and students as we hold unto the government on their promise to ensure their safe release to be reunited with family members and relatives without further delay.”
