Obasa: CDLS warns Sahara Reporters
A body of lawyers, Coalition of Lawyers for Democratic Sustenance (CLDS), has warned an online medium, Sahara Reporters not to involve Lawyers in its reports against the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudasiru Obasa.
The body, in a press release on Monday, admonished Sahara Reporters to desist from using the revered legal profession in its ‘obviously orchestrated but ignoble and spuriously unguarded’ battle against the Speaker.
According to CDLS, it is “without equivocation discernible that Sahara Reporters has been fighting a pecuniary induced proxy war against a gentleman speaker who has been peacefully steering the ship of affairs of the House for five years so far.”
It further stated: “The erratic publication depicting unprofessional pursuits by Sahara Reporters has been further heightened when the medium, in its latest publication, tries to drag the name of the legal profession into the mud.
The medium, under a fictitious name “Coalition of Public Interests Lawyers and Advocates”, is attempting to denigrate the legal profession by using its respected members’ names to burnish its malicious, selfish and criminally libelous and sponsored battle against the person of Obasa.”
In a report titled “Lawyers Ask EFCC To Arrest, Probe Lagos Speaker, Obasa, Over Corruption Allegation”, Sahara Reporters has reported that the body “has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to probe allegations of financial impropriety and grand corruption against Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.”
The CDLS has condemned the report, calling on the relevant institutions within and outside the legal profession to call the Sahara Reporters to order “in its vile and wanton disregard for legislative institution hiding under its abuse of access to the social media.”
