Take lead in telling the Nigerian story, Lai Mohammed charges local media houses

By Emmanuel Awosika

The Minister for Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Saturday urged local media houses to take the lead in telling the Nigerian story.

According to him, allowing foreign broadcast houses control the telling of local stories will encourage distortion of facts.

The Minister said this during the commissioning of the 89.3 FM in Oko, Oyo State, on Saturday.

“I challenge broadcast media in Nigeria to take the lead in telling the Nigerian story…” he stated.

“A situation in which foreign broadcast stations arrogate to themselves the power to tell our own story gives room for distortion of facts.”

Lai Mohammed further noted that the failure of local media to live up to their responsibilities was why CNN could not rely on them for news about events in Nigeria such as the recent #EndSARS protests.

“A situation in which the local media will rely and quote a foreign broadcast media, for an event that happened in Nigeria, is an anomaly. It has to stop,” he added.
