Travel ban: Immigration has not gotten official directives on the ban, NIS says

By Modupe Shodeinde

The Nigeria Immigration Service said it has not received official directives on the travel ban imposed on 100 Nigerians who flouted the mandatory seven-day post-arrival COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction test.

Spokesman of the NIS, DCI Sunday James, said he has not been officially informed about the ban action, Punch newspaper reported.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, on Friday, in a statement titled ‘Travel restriction,’ had announced  the six months’ travel restriction placed on the travellers.

The SGF had said the ban took effect on January 1, 2021, and “defaulting passengers have been notified and will be prevented from travelling out of the country during this period.”

The Punch however reports that when asked about the steps being taken by the NIS to enforce the directive on Sunday, James said, “I am not aware of the order, I have not received any official directive on it; I have only seen it on social media. You can call me tomorrow (Mon)”

Mustapha on December 29, 2020, had said with effect from January 1, passports of the first 100 passengers who fails to take their PCR test seven days after arrival in the country would be published in national newspapers.
