UEFA declares no confidence in Infantino, calls for FIFA leadership change
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has declared that it has lost confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino following the collapse of his controversial proposal to sell stakes in the commercial rights of the FIFA World Cup and other major competitions to private investors.
In a statement issued on Friday, UEFA criticised the now-abandoned plan, describing it as lacking transparency and accountability. The European football governing body said the episode had undermined trust in FIFA’s leadership and called for a comprehensive review of the organisation’s governance.
UEFA said the proposal had sparked widespread opposition from football stakeholders before Infantino eventually withdrew it, acknowledging that it had created divisions within the global game.
The governing body urged FIFA to implement governance reforms to restore confidence and ensure greater transparency in future decision-making.
Reports also indicate that several football officials are seeking alternative leadership ahead of FIFA’s next presidential election.
