UNILAG: Reason for Ogundipe’s reinstatement revealed

By Emmanuel Awosika

The Special Visitation Panel recommended the reinstatement of former University of Lagos Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, after it found no evidence of wrongdoing on his part.

This is according to the panel’s report submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari for consideration.

Director of Press and Public Relations in the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben-Bem Goong, made this known on Wednesday in a statement.

According to the statement, President Buhari overturned Ogundipe’s sacking by the University Governing Council led by Dr. Wale Babalakin and disbanded the Governing Council.

The statement said the Governing Council’s decision to remove Ogundipe over allegations of misconduct did not follow due process, as the Council failed to grant the VC a chance to defend himself.

The panel, set up by President Muhammadu Buhari, was critical of the Governing Council’s appointment of Professor Theophilus Soyombo as acting Vice-Chancellor, saying it contravened rules guding appointment of an acting Vice-Chancellor.

The statement reads: “Mr. President, after careful review of the report, has approved all the recommendations of the Panel.

“Accordingly, Professor Ogundipe is hereby reinstated as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos.

“The Governing Council of the University of Lagos, Chaired by Dr. B. O. Babalakin, is hereby dissolved.

“Mr. President hopes these steps will bring peace, stability, focus and direction to the university.”
