US Attempt To Extend Iran Arms Embargo Fails

By Emmanuel Awosika

The United States’ supremacy in the United Nations Security council has been dealt a major blow following its failure to convince member states to extend the arms embargo on Iran.

Only one member country, the Dominican Republic, had supported the US’ resolution to give an indefinite extension to the embargo, meaning it could not get the nine assenting votes it needed to get the resolution through.

A total of eleven member states on the Security Council had abstained voting. The number included US long-term allies, Britain, France and Germany, in another show of the Trump’s disconnect from the international community.

The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, described the council’s failure to act decisively in the interest of international peace and security as “inexcusable”.

In similar fashion, Israel called the decision a “disgrace”, saying the decision would further increase instability in the Middle East and continue the spread of violence around the world.

The US resolution had sought to extend the embargo of possession of conventional arms by Iran, due to expire on October 18 under the terms of the Iran nuclear deal.

Meanwhile, Iran’s leader, Hassan Rhouani, has claimed victory over the US, saying it had “failed in this conspiracy with humiliation.”

“This day will go down in the history of our Iran and in the history of fighting global arrogance,” he added.
