No fewer than 15 shops were razed during a clash between Yoruba and Hausa Youths in Igboolumu area of Ikorodu West Local Government in Lagos.

The incident, which occured on Thursday, allegedly started when some Hausa youths attacked two Yoruba boys around Ola Imam Street in Igboolomu with machetes and inflicted injuries on them.

The Yoruba youths had reportedly mounted a reprisal against their aggressors leading to a free-for-all which saw about 15 shops burnt to the ground.

According to residents of the community, conflict had been brewing between the Hausa and Yoruba youths since Monday, but elders in the community had intervened to calm tensions.

Already reports from the community reveal that residents are moving out for fear of being caught up in the clashes.

Speaking on the conflict, Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said, “It was a minor conflict between the two groups, but the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has intervened in the matter and has called the leaders of the two sides for an amicable settlement.

“Ethnic colouration should not be attached to it; it was just a minor issue and the young men involved were mostly motorcyclists. But we are on top of the situation and normalcy has been restored in the community.”
