COVID-19: Edo expresses worry over community spread

The Edo State Government is worried over the community spread of coeonavirus, expressing concern as the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the second wave of the pandemic keeps rising in the state.
The State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi, said this during a virtual meeting of the State COVID-19 Task Force, presided over by Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Obi, who urged residents to be cautious and observe all precautionary and safety measures against the spread of the virus, noted that the risk of spread in the state was higher as community transmission has risen to 90.4 per cent.
He said Edo State recorded 54 new cases of COVID-19 and one death, in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths in the second wave to 36.
“We also recorded infection of three new health workers with 740 active cases who are currently receiving treatment in various treatment and isolation centres in the state.
“Edo has continued to record a progressive increase in the number of confirmed cases across the state as community transmission of the second wave of the pandemic has reached 90.4 per cent.
“This is quite alarming and calls for greater concern. We urge everyone to take responsibility for their health by complementing the government’s efforts at keeping citizens safe and healthy.”
“We urge all residents to ensure strict compliance to the laid down guidelines against the spread of the virus including the compulsory wearing of facemasks in public, observing physical distancing and regular washing of hands with soap under running water.”
