 COVID-19 won’t be last pandemic — WHO

By Emmanuel Awosika

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) won’t the be last pandemic.

Director-General of WHO, Tedros Ghebreyesus, made the revelation in a video to mark the first-ever International Day of Epidemic Preparedness on Sunday.

Ghebreyesus said, “History tells us that this won’t be the last pandemic and epidemics are a fact of life.”

He opined that increased public investment in public health will guarantee that “our children and their children inherit a safer, more resilient and more sustainable world.”

He stated that the COVID-19 pandemic was no surprise to health officials, adding that warnings of a global pandemic had been prevalent over the years.

However, he urged government and society to see a silver lining in the pandemic and learn the lessons it is teaching.

“We must all learn the lessons the pandemic is teaching us,” Ghebreyesus said.

“This includes investment in preparedness capacities not just in the health sector but rather an ‘all-of-government and all of the social approach.

“The pandemic has highlighted the intimate links between the health of humans, animals and planets, which require a common approach.”
