Lawan, Gbajabiamila tells youths to stop protests, excercise patience

By Modupe Shodeinde

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, after meeting with the President Muhammadu Buhari over the ongoing #EndSARS protest, has urged the youths to halt the protests.

Lawan said the country is in a trying time and the youths should stop the protests since their demands were being attended to.

He said they have expressed their legitimate right and the government has listened.

“This is certainly a trying moment for our country and the leadership of this country.

“As the National Assembly, we believe we have critical and crucial roles in ensuring that the current situation of protests across the country is brought to an end,” he said.

He said that the meeting was convened in order to determine what roles the two arms of government will play in addressing the situation. And where legislative action will be required, he said the lawmakers were ready to act on it.

The senate president said they would also ensure the executives performed their duties.

Gbajabiamila also urged the youth to exercise patience and give the President the benefit of the doubt since he is the one scrapping the SARS unit this time and not the IGP

He said they can continue the protest if in two weeks time nothing has been done.

He said, “I have heard the stories that ‘we have heard end SARS like four times before’. That is what people are saying.

“Like I said, you have never heard it from Mr President, but now, he has said so. So, let us tarry a little while. Let us sit back. We have got what we want, let us sit back and see what happens

“If you like, you begin your protests again if nothing happens in two weeks. But let us not continue this thing and lose the plot. That is what I don’t want.”

He explained that the need to exercise patience is because their demands are policy matters and cannot be achieved overnight.

“It is a process and the important thing is that the government has heard you loud and clear. It is a continuous engagement. We will be engaging our youths in matters of policy and communicate with Mr President as well on what needs to be done.” he said
