Minister for Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, announced the Federal Government’s declaration of October 1st as a public holiday to celebrate Nigeria’s 60th Independence Anniversary.

The announcement was contained in a statement released by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Georgina Ehuriah, and titled ‘FG Declares Thursday, October 1, 2020, Public Holiday, To Mark Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary’.

The Minister congratulated Nigerians for their feats in different areas including education, economic affairs, creative industry, and so on.

He said that while “celebrating sixty years of independence really calls for pomp and pageantry”, the COVID-19 pandemic made it imperative to “have a low-keyed celebration at this time.”

Continuing, he wished Nigerians a fruitful independence celebration and urged them to united in spite of their differences.

According to him, “our founding fathers, in spite of the differences in faith, tribe and tongue came together for Nigeria’s independence.”
