Black Tuesday: soldiers open fire, massacre unarmed protesters

By Modupe Shodeinde

Nigerians witnessed a tearful night when armed men opened fire on protesters at Lekki tollgate around 7pm on Tuesday.

Several protesters have been reported dead while many injured are being treated in hospitals.

The tragedy struck hours after the Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, declared a 24-hour curfew in the state.

#EndSARS protesters have been demonstrating against police brutality and extrajudicial killings at the Lekki tollgate for over a week.

According to witnesses and reports online, the soldiers in a bid to disperse the demonstrators at the site of the protest at first, fired shots in the air, however, there was a drastic turn when the armed soldiers started shooting directly at the unarmed demonstrators.

While some reported that the shootings started immediately the lights at the Lekki tollgate site suddenly went off, pitching the area into darkness.

A live recording of the incident on Instagram by DJ Switch, a popular disc jockey, showed videos of people trying to care for those who were shot.

Videos also showed continuous shooting at the protesters, with people scrambling for safety.

Figures of the dead and injured are still yet unclear.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation within and outside the country.
