 Police commence SWAT personnel training

By Modupe Shodeinde

The police authorities will commence training of the new 1,850 Special Weapons and Tactics Team personnel on Monday, October 19, 2020.

This will be done in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross and other development partners in a three-week training.

This training will hold at the Police Mobile Force Training School, Ila Oragun, Osun State and the PMF Training School, Ende Hills, Nasarawa State.

On Sunday, in a statement, titled: ‘NPF new tactical team commences training Monday, October 19’, the police spokesperson, Frank Mba, said the SWAT which replaced the SARS, which was disbanded for impunity and misconduct, would be trained in humanitarian laws, police conduct in a conflict situation, human rights in the use of force and firearms, arrest and detention, amongst others.

He added that they will also be trained in modern-day police ethics and values, intelligence-led policing, operation planning/tactical decision-making processes, hostage rescue tactics and operation, weapon handling, first aid/basic life-saving skills, stress/fear management, police-citizens relations and emotional intelligence.

According to the statement, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, charged the coordinator of the training to ensure a diligent and timely delivery of the tactical team. This is to ensure that the void created by the dissolution of the defunct SARS is filled, especially during the last quarter of the year which is usually characterised by a surge in robbery and criminal activities in the country.

Adamu also stated that, “No personnel of the defunct SARS would be part of the SWAT, noting that the officers selected for the training are young, smart and energetic officers who have acquired not less than seven years working experience with clean service records – no pending disciplinary matters, no record of violation of rights of citizens or misuse of firearms.”

According to him, the officers will undergo physical fitness tests, medical and toxicology screening. Those found to be unsuitable will be discharged.
The IG assured that the new unit will be highly professional and operate within dictates of the rule of law, ethical standards and the best international policing practises.

He enjoined the citizens to be patient and cooperate with the Force “in the development drive for a new and reformed Nigerian Police Force”
